The Isanti (Santee) Nation is located within Knox County, immediately west of Niobrara, Nebraska. Originally the people of this Tribe called Minnesota home but relocated to Nebraska in the mid 1800’s due to disease and starvation in Minnesota. They are part of a larger group known as the Dakota Nation, which is also composed of the Mdewakantonwan, Wahpeton, Sissetons, and the Wapekute tribes. The Santee Tribe is a woodlands tribe, living in semi-permanent villages and engaging in some farming.
