Farm to School Month Challenge

Walk 2 Unlock is excited to partner in a special challenge celebrating National Farm to School Month!

Each October, communities across the country come together to strengthen connections between schools, food and local farmers! This year’s National Farm to School Month theme, Growing for the Future, emphasizes the role of farm to school and early care in creating thriving communities now and in the future. Through this partnership, we are bringing together two important aspects of wellness: staying active and eating well. Learn more about farm to school and find ways to get involved by visiting the National Farm to School Network’s website at farmtoschoolmonth.org.

Movement matters!

With so much time on screens, Americans young and old are not getting the recommended physical activity needed for optimal health. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition recommends that children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 years do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. However, less than one-quarter (24%) of children in this age group actually achieve this goal. Each week adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and 2 days of muscle strengthening activity. However, as of 2020, it’s the same story: only 24.2% of adults aged 18 and over met the recommendation. The percentage of adults who met both physical activity guidelines was higher among men (28.3%) than women (20.4%) and decreased with age for both and women.

Farm to School

October is National Farm to School Month, a time to celebrate connections
happening all over the country between schools, food and local farmers! This year, our theme is From Soil to Sea: Nourishing People and Planet. Farm to school
enriches the connection communities have with fresh, nourishing food and local food producers by enhancing food purchasing and education practices at schools and early care and education sites.
