How can dairy be part of the environmental solution? Why is protecting the environment important? We all play a role in keeping our planet as good or better than we found it. Upcycling means reusing things in a way to create a product of higher quality than the original. Dairy cows actually play an important role in a sustainable food system as up cyclers. They can eat leftovers that people can’t eat, like distillers’ grain, citrus peels and almond hulls, which would otherwise go into landfills and create nutritious milk! Up to 306 million pounds of food waste is upcycled by dairy cows each day, which would otherwise crowd our landfills.
Your local dairy farmers here in Nebraska have always kept sustainability as a priority and work to recycle water up to four times, adopt no till farming to protect soil and utilize solar panels and LED lightbulbs to conserve energy.
