On May 22, 2004, one of the largest tornadoes in Nebraska history struck the Lancaster County town of Hallam. The 2.5 mile-wide F4 twister struck in the evening, killing a 73-year-old woman and injuring 38 others. Tornadoes stayed on the ground from 7:30 p.m. to 9:10 p.m., with the Hallam tornado carving out a 52-mile path. That storm system spawned 19 confirmed tornadoes, leveling 158 homes and damaging dozens of others. Gage, Saline, Lancaster and Cass counties were designated federal disaster areas.
