Minds and movement matter
With so much time on screens, Americans young and old are not getting the recommended physical activity needed for optimal health. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition recommends that children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 years do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. However, less than one-quarter (24%) of children in this age group actually achieve this goal. Each week adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and 2 days of muscle strengthening activity. However, as of 2020, it’s the same story: only 24.2% of adults aged 18 and over met the recommendation. The percentage of adults who met both physical activity guidelines was higher among men (28.3%) than women (20.4%) and decreased with age for both and women.
The state of mental health
In the United States, 21% of adults (52.9 million people) have experienced a mental health condition. Unfortunately, children are also affected: one in six American children aged 2-8 years old had a diagnosed mental, behavioral or developmental disorder, with one in three adolescents aged 12-17 having persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness.
The national data is similar to our Nebraska data. In Nebraska, 36% of high school students felt sad or hopeless almost every day for at least two weeks. Female students were nearly twice as likely as male students to report feeling sad or hopeless. Worldwide, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of anxiety and depressive disorders has grown.
